The Red Fort or Lal Qila is India’s Famous Fort

sThe Red Fort also known as Lal Qila and Delhi’s most magnificent monument as it is located in Delhi, India. This monument was built by Emperor Shah Jahan. Actually,
Shah Jahan shifted his capital from Agra to Shahjahanabad and on 16th April 1639, he laid the foundation of Red Fort.

It took full nine years to build this monument and on 16th April 1648, got completed. About one crore rupees was spent on its construction. To build the exotic palaces within the fort, half of this sum was spent. It is built from red sandstone walls that surround it and it is octagonal in shape with two longer sides on the west and east.

The Red Fort or Lal Qila has the height varying from 18 mts. and has walls extending up to 2 kms. in length with on the river side to 33 mts. on the city side. The perimeter of its strong fort is about 2.41 km.

Following are the main buildings within the fort:


Diwan-i-Am is also known as Hall of Public Audience, situated in the Red Fort of Delhi. It was richly ornamented with gilded stuccowork and originally had a courtyard on its front. Heavy curtains which were three bays in depth graced the main hall.

Moti Masjid

Moti Masjid, also known as Pearl Mosque is the personal mosque of Aurungzeb, situated to the west of Hamam. Laid on a higher level than courtyards, the prayer-hall of the mosque has inlaid black-marble outlines of ‘musallas’ and surmounted by three bulbous domes.


Accompanying the Diwan-i-Khas, the Hamam which is known as bathroom set has three apartments interconnected by corridors. The dados and marble floors are inlaid with floral patterns of multi-colored stones.

Naubat Khana or Naqqar Khana

Naubat Khana means the Drum House, lies at the entrance of the palace area. At the appointed hours, here music was played five times a day.

Mumtaz Mahal

Mumtaz Mahal is one of the original six main-palaces situated along the river front and it was also known as Chhoti Baithak. A beautiful water channel, Nahr-i-Bihisht flew through these palaces. But, this palace has been removed as it was totally in ruins.

Therefore, Red Fort is one of the most spectacular pieces of Mughal Architecture.
